THE GOOD NEWS
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news that God, in His infinite mercy, has provided salvation for sinners through the person and work of His Son. All men are sinners by nature and by practice. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Because of our sin, we stand under the just judgment of a holy God: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
In the fullness of time, God sent forth His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who took upon Himself human flesh, lived a perfect and sinless life, and willingly went to the cross. There He suffered and died as the substitute for His people, bearing the full wrath of God against sin. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). The apostle Paul summarizes the heart of the Gospel with these words: “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
This same Jesus who was crucified is now risen and exalted at the right hand of God. Salvation is found in Him alone. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). The call of the Gospel is clear: “Repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15). All who, by the grace of God, turn from their sin and trust in the finished work of Christ alone are justified freely by His blood, receive the forgiveness of sins, and are given eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
This is the Gospel of Christ—the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth (Romans 1:16).
